From this May and in accordance with Directive 2004/24/EC on traditional herbal medicinal plants , which provided for a transitional period of seven years can only stay in the European Union market for such drugs registered and approved features.

The Directive was adopted by the European Parliament and the Council on 31 March 2004 and it is contemplated transitional period of seven years for the registration of traditional medicines that were already on the market when it entered into force.

Applicants have had seven years to file an application to the competent authorities of the Member States that wish to market their product. If a herbal medicine is not registered or licensed as of April 30, 2011, can not be in the market of the European Union and from May 1, 2011. After this date, manufacturers of traditional herbal medicines plants can continue to seek registration under the simplified procedure.

Under the terms of the directive does not prohibit food supplements and herbal infusions, and not condemn alternative therapies like homeopathy.
